SEAWARD.
There flowed a stately river Into the boundless sea ; And on its waves the lilies Lay floating gracefully. Then spoke the fairest lily — The queen of all was she— ... " What wouldst thou be, O Biver, If it were not for me ? " Hadst thou not me and my sisters, Full lonesome wouldst thou be, And thy dark, mournful waters Would sigh unceasingly." Then spoke the river — " O Lily, I thank the Gods for thee — iFor thee and for aii the blossoms That deck my banks and me. " But wert thou and every blossom Faded eternally Deem not, O fairest lily, That I should sigh for thee. "For though thou art here, I may not Carry thee on with me, And though thou wert gone for ever, I still should reach the sea." — Shilling Magazine. B.E.F.
