COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

SOUTHLAND Tiaras Office. lhursday, 19th April. The following are the Customs Eeturns for — Wednesday, 18th April. Iron Fencing ... ...£222 10 0 Tobacco, 229 lbs. ... 28 12 6 £251 2 6 Thursday, 19th April. — Nil. Messrs. Boyse, Mudie and Miller, of Dunedin and Oamaru, report under date 12th April : — We have to report an unabated demand for every description of store sheep, lamb 3 and ewes especially, causing a slight advance on former quotations. That advance is certainly moderate, as buyers and sellers are equally firm, the former being' only tempted by the hitherto easy prices to invest largely at profitable margin to stock-up country. Store cattle are scarce, many enquiries, but. few completed transactions, and holders are firm. The market for fat sheep has not participated to any extent in the present improvement; large numbers are offered in both Provinces at firmer rates. For fat cattle the demand is steady, with an upward tendency. Squatting properties, safe and reliable investments, meet with ready purchasers at increased rates. Total number of bales of wool shipped from our port to date, 5837. Cattle, Fat. — On the station, in Otago, we quote at 40s to 42s 6d per lOOlbs ; in Canterbury, 50s per 1001 b for prime.
