COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
Southland Times Office,
Tuesday, 17th April.
The month's transactions have shown a decided improvement. During the firsfc two weeks considerable up-country orders were executed, and during the last fortnight a steady trade has been done. Imported provisions remain firm at former quotatiens with bare stocks. Colonial produce has an upward tendency. The weather Ua3 been unfavorable to the farmers ; they have not been able to forward their produce to town, and many have not yet thrashed out. The potato crop is not equal to previous years, and there is a probability of this article .being scarce during th c winter. The supply of oats, wheat, and barley (provincial) is not equal to the demand, and other dairy produco is commanding advanced prices. The resumption of the railway works has given a stabflity to trade and has immediately influenced the market, and engendered a feeling of confidence in the minds of the traders. The commercial aspect of the province is healthy. Thaprosperity of the goldfields in the adjacent dietriets of InvercargiU give promise of a steady improvement in trade. First-class Adelaide flour may be quoted at £25 ; Chilian, £23. Oats are scarce, but no great change has taken place, the price being still about 4s 6 per bushel, and bran 3s. Maize is enquired for, but very -little in the market. Butter keeps up, and is scarce. Sugars run high ; best white, £60 ; second white, £58 ; third counters, £56. The month's revenue shows a marked increase, and the various reports subjoined are evidence of rising markets. Monday, Aphil 16.
