The s.s. Alhambra's appearance this morning was quite unexpected, being a day before her advertised time of sailing from this porfc ; she left Dunedin at sp.m. on the-i6th inst. ; encountered strong head winds; arrived al the wharf at 11.30 on the lVih; after discharging a few packages of cargo that was short on her previous trip from Melbourne, sho sailed at 1 p.m. We are sorry to learn that Captain M'Lean accidentaUy fell and hurt his leg, while on the passage from Melbourno to this port, and that he is now unable to stand on deck. The ship was brought into porfc by the pilot, Mr Longford.
The ketch, Jane EUen, left Dunedin, for Invercargill, with general cargo, on the 12th insfc., and was obliged to anchor in the "Nuggets," through a continuance of strong westerly winds. She arrived here on the 16th insfc., and is now at anchor at the heads — windbound.
Intending passengers to Melbourne wiU seldom have such an opportunity as wdl occur on Thursday, 19th insfc. The* steamships Albion and Rangitoto wiU saU from the wharf, here, on the above dates. Their accommodation for aU classes of passengers is firstclass, and their speed,, we beUeve, second to none ;, and they will, with ease, accomplish the passage to Melbourne in four or five days.
The Cutter Petrel, Captain Carter, arrived at Riverton on Sunday last, having left Jackson's Bay on sth instant, with 16 passengers, old experienced diggers. This iB the fourth time of his visiting this port. Reports the whaling brig, Amhurst, Capt. GUroy, caUed in afc Jackson's Bay on 3rd inst. clean ; not seen a whale. Also, same day, the schooner, Aperima, landed some cargo and went on to Hokitika. The Maid of Erin, schooner, from Dunedin, arrived on 2nd instant, landed passengers aud cargo. Left for Bruce Bay and Hokitika, Sighted the brier, Amhurst, on 7th met., cruising ofl* Milford Sound. Experienced very heavy S.W. and westerly gales during the passage. Messrs. Fryetts' party have arrived, and inform me that they have prospected the whole of the coast, from Jackson's Bay to BeU Point, and southward ofthe Awarua River: found 'gold. Being short of provisions, were compeUed to retrace tl-eir steps back again to Jackson's Bay, without being able to give the country a fair trial! A.re sanguine good wages could be gofc if provisions were at hand. Among the passengers per Petrel, are Messrs M'lntoish and Quin— old experienced diggers at beach workings, who Btate that the country from Green Island Point to_ here, has a likely appearance, and are determined to give it a thorough trial, and in a short time it will soon be known whether Southland goldfields are of importance.
