RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Before H. M'Culloch, Esq:, E. M.) "WEDNESDAY 11th APRIL. James Cams, charged with stealing several articles of wearing apparel, from the ship England, was remanded to Campbelltown for examination. Martin Connor was charged with stealing £6 and a pocket-knife, the property of William Edwards. It appears that the prosecutor, a seaman, was paid off from his vessel on Tuesday last, and having fallen in with some men with whom he was acquainted, (the prisoner being one of them), he commenced treating them at different public houses and became very tipsy. At the Grolden Age Hotel he was displaying his money consisting of bank notes, ■ and left it on the counter for some time. Mrs Yon Hammer, the wife of the proprietor of the G-olden Age, saw the prisoner take one of the notes and put it in his coat pocket. She then sent for a constable. In the constable's presence, the prisoner took oft his coat to fight, and in doing so, a £1 note dropped from it. He was taken to the lock-up where, on the coat being searched, a £o note and a knife were found in the pocket. These the prosecutor identified as his property. After the completion of the evidence, the prisoner was asked by the Magistrate, in the usual form, whether he had any statement to make. He replied that the property was not his own, and that he ; did not know how he came by it as he was drunk. The accused was then committed for trial.
