The Wellington Advertiser gives the following particulars of an accident at Wanganui, by which lour lives were lost : — " Captain Lowe, of the s.s. Wan^anui, has courteously furnished us with the particulars of a melancholy and fatal accident which occurred on Sunday last at Wanganui, and by which four lives were lost. It appers that the schooner Shamrock, under the command of the notorious Captain Hayes, had arrived off the bar from the Fiji Islands, and a boat, containing the mate, two seaman, Mr Roberts (son of Mr H. B. Roberts, solicitor, Wanganui,) and a Fijian woman, was sent in for the purpose of landing Mr Roberts. In attempting to cross the bar the boat was swamped, and all those in her, except the woman, were drowned." The following particulars of the melancholy event are from the Wanganui Times extra: — "It becomes our painful duty to record a most disastrous accident which occurred at the Wanganui Heads, yesterday. It appears that the schooner Shamrock, .irom Fiji Islands, and bound for Lyttelton, having passengers on board for Wanganui, anchored outside the Heads. The well-known Captain Hayes, unwilling to lose time, attempted to land his passengers.by means of a small boat totally unsuited for the purpose. The boat contained the mate, two sailors who had worked thenpassage, and the son of our respected townsman, H. B. Boberts, Esq. ; also three Maoris from the Fiji Islands, one a female. On approaching the surf the woman told the mate that the boat would be swamped, and offered to swim on shore with him. She jumped overboard, and directly afterwards the boat upset. The woman exerted herself to the utmost to save the mate, but failed in the attempt. The four Europeans met a watery grave. The whole community deeply sympathise with Mr Roberts iv his sad bereavement ; this is the second son he has lost by drowning."
