DUNEDIN.
The foltowing is the commercial intelligence which appears in the Dailg Times of the 31st _lt :— Yesterday, being all but a general holiday, no business worth naming took place ; however, to- ' day, a tolerable amount of small trade has been '< done, though no transactions of a special character have transpired. Quotations for all staple ( sgoods are substantially unchanged. The Storno- , was has brought some much needed accessions to j tocks of British imports. ', ' ] The Argus, of the 31st March, has the following commercial intelligence : — . The import markets to-day have been character- 9 [ ised by a great want of animation, consequent on < the holidays. In the market for breadstuff's there is , not the slightest improvement to report ; a few trifling sales of Adelaide flour for trade purposes, to supply local wants, are made at £18 for 1 country and £19 to £19 10s. for town brands, -. but, with these exceptions, there is no inquiry. No sales of wheat can be effected, and in the , present position of the market, no quotation eaabe given. Oats continue in brisk demand, at very ' full figures ; a parcel of 750 bags was placed at ] ss. 4_d. A farther advance has been established - on maize. Pales to a fair extent have been . effected at 6s. and 6s. 2d. Coarse salt has been disposed of in small lots at £3 10s.; there { are, however, no purchasers of quantities at thia ( figure. Crystals of soda find buyers at £13. In 1 teas, sales have transpired of fine medium - congous at Is. Bd. in bond. Candels are com- ( paratively neglected ; we hear, however, of a , parcel of 500 boxes Brandon's having been quitted at 13id, Buyers of malt purchase very '> sparingly at the price required by the holders of * the few shipments lately to hand. Sales are ( made at 16s. but generally these do not exceed . 200 bushels at a time. .Hops (1865) have been " sold at 2s. Bottled stouts are still rising j for a shipment of Burke's as high a_ lis. 9d. has been 1 realised, and sales of Maehen'a have been _ effected at lis. 6d. Kerosene oil is firmer. Sales * of Downer's have been made at 3s. 4d. md 3s j •lid. ; there are likewise buyers to arrive in the - market. _» rice there is more fir-ine-8 shvm since the auction sale. Under the hammer - about 150 tons of the Ava's cargo of Patna were -| quitted at £21 15s. • but, subsequently, two t fifty, ton parcels "were sold privately at £22 lOe, The Melbourne Banking Company was registered , on the 28th, in.t,, under the Companies Statute of J
new marine insurance company, to be named the English, Australian, and New Zealand Marine Insurance company. We extract the following from the Lyttelton Times of the Slst ult. : — Our markets have exhibited a little more animation during the past week, and inquiries for goods have been more frequent than for some weeks past. The arrivals of the Cissy and "Victory will supply our market with very many goods much wanted, and already some considerable parcels have been sold to land. The goods named in our last week's issue as beiDg \ cry scarce still continue so ; and as the shipments are exceedingly small, we look for high prices for such articles as bacon, hams, cheese, currants, &c, We hear of large purchases having been made of cornsacks, in anticipation, we presume, oi higher prices ruling. Some good parcels- oi candles have also changed hands, and inquiries are being made for woolpacks, induced, we imagine, by the lowness of the market rates The money market has continued unchanged since our last, but discounts are a shade stiffer Meetings of creditors have been held in twe estates, shewing liabilities, we understand, to -the extent in all of about £6000, with tolerably fail assets.
