The s.s. Wellington, Captain Francis, left Port Chalmers at 5 p.m. on the 29th inst., experienced strong head winds, arriving at the wharf at 10.30 a.m. on the 30th inst. : she wttl sail from Dunedin and Northern Ports this day, (2nd inst.,) at 4 p.m. The s.s. Auckland, Captain RandaU, left Port Chalmers at 5.30 p.m. on the 29th inst. ; had strong head winds to the Bluff, arriving at the whart at 3 p.m.*on the 30th, discharged her cargo, ' ex Tararua, from Melbourne, and sailed for that port at five p.m. The -New Zealand Company's new steamer Taranaki has arrived at Wellington, and is to take the place o£ the Wellington (while that vessel undergoes an overhaul). We may expect to see her at the Bluff this month. We hear there is a prospect of an amalgamation between this company and another possessing some fine vessels. * The Helenslee, when off the Bluff, passed a mast and yards with Europe rigging, apparently belonging to a vessel of 250 tons. The above will, doubtless, be those lost by the barque Princess, which lately put in here dismasted.— Daily Times. At a late hour last night we received, information that the William Miskin, screw steamer, has safely arrived at the Grey, crossing the bar at half tide without the aid of signals. This proves that at present the Grey entrance is in a most favorable state. It will, perhaps, be remembered that the' William Miskin when last here was in a leaky condition, having, it is supposed, received some injury through taking the ground at, the coal wharf in the Grey Rivei-, and when she arrived at Hokitika was beached, but no leak could be discovered, the rent in her plates, if such there was, having in the meantime taken up. This cursory examination, however, was not considered satisfactory ; so on her arrival in Nelson ■h6 was placed upon the cradle and thoroughly overhauled, the result behig that a piece of rock ■which had penetrated through and through the plate was found sticking in her. bottom, and to large was the aperture made that had it by any means dropped out the vessel must have foundered. This extraordinary circumstance recalls to our memory the story of the Bristol, West Indiaman, which, having sprung a leak at sea that suddenly ceased, was on arrival into port docked, when upon examination a large dolphin was found jammed in the rent. ' The William Miskin witt leave the Grey this morning for Hokitika, and may be expected to arrive at high water. — West Coast Times, 20th. Long- Journey of a Botteb Found at Sea. — The " Moniteur " of New Caledon'a, of 28th January, 1866, furnishes the following notice : — "M. the Lieutenant Banare, commander of the Fine, during the hydrographic labors that he has just been executing in the north of New Caledonia found in November, 1865, in a corked bottle on the north-west coast, the foUowing note: — " Sunday, 2Uth November, 1864. The brig Louisa, onherwayfromDunedin, Otago, to Sydney eleven days at sea ; longitude, 165 degrees, 51 minutes east ; latitude, 37 degrees, 14 minutes south. On board a very slender supply of flour and other necessaries. John Austin, mate, John Black, second mate. John Austin, mate, finding himself in a desperate condition, is thinking on the slices of roast beef he wttl eat when he arrives in Sydney." It is worthy of remark, tha* during the twelve months, from November, 1864, to November, 1865, this bottle was carried due north more than 1,100 miles. The brig Zero was recently found by fishermen, abandoned on the coast of Halifax. She was well provided with stores ; but on examination, it was found that an attempt had been made to scuttle her. Shortly afterwards, the mate, the steward, and another of the crew of the Zero appeared in Lunenburg, and said that the vessel had been abandoned in consequence of the captain having been knocked overboard by the boom. Suspicion was aroused ; they were arrested, and then the mate confessed. It appeared that when the brig arrived off Havre, the captain had a quarrel about terms with some of the crew, and the men conspired to mutiny. The steward attacked the captain in his cabin, and with the assistance of one of the crew, threw the stttl breathing body overboard. They then left in the boat, and made for the shore. — "Sydnew Morning Herald," 12 Feb.
