HAWKE'S BAY.

The Sturt arrived in port yesterday. We have Napier papers to the 6th instant. The Herald of that date says : — " The St. Kilda returned to Napier on Sunday last, having on board a large number of prisoners en route to the Chatham Islands, to which they are immediately to be transported. This is the first decided step towards dealing with the question of native prisoners ; and we believe the effect on the native mind will be good, no punishment being more felt than that of being sent away from the Island, while escape will be rendered all but impossible." Speaking of hia Excellency's departure for Auckland, the same journal of the 27th ult., says :— " Sir George Grey is also accompanied by the remarkable and celebrated prophet Te TJa — the man who was to raise the dead, cure the halt and maimed, and repeople the New Zealand Islands by calling all the dead of past ages to life, and driving all foreigners into the sea. It is well known that Te Ua has been, and is now, subject to fits of temporary insanity ; he cannot, therefore, be considered accountable for his action's. That many have been deluded by him, on the East as well as the West Coast, has been painfully evident. He now renounces his folly — the result, as he himself admits, of porangi or madness. We trust his recantation is to be depended upon ; at all events that , he may not have the opportunity, should he have the will, of again deluding his race of leading them on to destruction."
