TO THE EDITOB OF THE SOUTHLAND TIMES. Sic, — In reply to an enquiry as to ■who wrote " the celebrated letter of 18th July, 1865, from His Honor the Superintendent to Mr Marchant, ignoring his claim." — " Your contemporary says that he heard it was the composition of the late Provincial Treasurer, Mr Stuart." I have heard, Sir, that it was composed by the late Provincial Solicitor, Mr Macdonald, with the entire concurrence, and at the request of His Honor the Superinteudent. As the letter is a well written, business-like production, I cannot but conclude that it was written by Mr Macdonald rather than Mr Stuart, whose time when in office was, I believe, principally occupied in superintending the growth of that interesting esculent— -the potato, and watching the gradual development of that valuable adjunct to a dinnertable — the cabbage ; not to mention other agricultural produce. — Yours, &c, Reply.
