LATER NEWS FROM ENGLAND.
(From the Argus, 2nd March.) The Souchays arrived at Brisbane afc half-past five p.m. on Monday last. We , received the following telegram yesterday: — London, Jan, 4. ; A.n advance on Bank rates this day excited an advance in general business transactions, and caused a similar advance on the French Bourse. It is understood • that a foreign demand for gold is the cause. Consols, 87^. There has been a great fire at St. Katherine's Wharf, when large quantities of jute, flax, coir-fibre, and tallow were destroyed. The damage is estimated afc £220,000. London, Jan. 9. « The Bank rate is eight per cent., and Consols 87. The stock and share market is dull. In discounts accommodation is active, in consequence of Indian bills arriving at maturity ; rates are barely maiatained. The Banda Kariree prizemoney case has been commenced in the Admiralty Court. ■ Manchester, Jan. 10. Good yarns are quiet ; money tight j. exports small. London, Jan. 12. In cotton little is doing; goods are rather higher. London, Jan. 16. The Bank rate is eight per cent. •• ■ •
