MATAURA ELECTION. To the Hon. Dr. Menzies ; J. Blaoklook Esq. ; P. Dalrymple," Esq. ; W. H. Calder, Esq. j »nd the other gentlemen signing the Requisition. Dunedin, 15th Feb., 1866. ri ENTLEMEN,— I thank you very heartily for the proof of your confidence which I have received in the Requisition to stand for the Mataura District in the New Parhament. I gladly place my services at your disposal, and need hardly say, that if elected I shall continue to devote my best energies in the Assembly for the interests, of the Province. As I shaU wait upon the Electors before the nomination, and take a pubhc opportunity of explaining my views on the course of public affairs, I need not, in this address, go into poUtical questions. There is one point, however, on which I earnestly hope the whole body of Elector, in the Province wttl act together. Hitherto Southland has not had the weight, in the Assembly which she now possesses by the number of members assigned to her in the representation It depends upon the people themselves whether the power they now have shall have its fuU results in the Councils of the Colony. This can only be obtained by sending men to the Assembly who wttl work together on the main questions, which must occupy the attention of our rulers during the Parliament now about to assemble ; and your members should be ready to give way to each other in minor points, for the sake of union, where large and even vital interests are at stake. It is in this spirit that I shaU seek your suffrages j and I may venture tb hope that it wttl equaUy animate those who, if I am returned, wttl be my helpmates in a work which was never so difficult or full of responsibility to pubhc men as now. ** I have tbe honor to be, Gentlemen, Your faithful servant, F.
