Lady Don has become lessee. Jones is being tried for murder, and the case is not finished. There was a great fire last night at 11 o'clock. It commenced at the Caledonian Boarding House, in Maclaggan-street. The Scandinavian and Melbourne Hotels, with about thirty shops and houses front- ] ing Maclaggan-street, have been des- j troyed as high up as Tomlinson's stables at the foot of the hill • and twice as many small cottages at the rear, towards Highstreec. tl u o w^ -was taken. No lives were lost. Loss not been ascer^ tained. Vogel has resigned his seat in Provincial Council. Stevens troupe is playing at the Royal. 4.35 p.m. Representatives : Vogel aud O'Neil have been elected for the goldfields. Nominations, goldfield boroughs — Main, Manders, Bradshaw. Miller, late City Engineer, 22 ; speeches of Patterson explanatory and satisfactory. Millers sensible and practical ; Reynolds independent and tolerably ; Birch concise, and Grants, a mess of hard fact embellished with classical quotations, and disfigured by coarse personalities. Jones the Waipori murderer, found guilty and sentenced to death.
