MATATJRA ELECTION. To the Hon. Dr. Menzies ; J. Blacklock, Esq. ; P. DaibymfliE, Esq. ; W. H. Caidee, Esq.; end the other gentlemen signing the Requisition. Dunedin, loth Feb., 1866. r\ ENTLEMEN, — I- thank you very heartily for the proof of your confidence which I have received in the Requisition to stand for the Mataura District in the New Parliament. I gladly place my services at your disposal, and need hardly say, that if elected I shall continue to devote my best energies in the Assembly for the interests of the Province. [ As I shall wait upon the Electors before the nomination, and take a public opportunity of explaining my views on the course of public affairs, I need not, in this address, go into political questions. There is one point, however, on which I earnestly hope the whole body of Elector, in the Province will act together. Hitherto Southland has not had the weight in the Assembly which she now possesses by the number of members assigned to her in the representation. It depends upon the people themselves whether the power they now have shall have its full results in the Councils of the Colony. This can only be obtained by sending men to the Assembly who will work together on the main questions, which must occupy the attention of our rulers during the Parliament now about to assemble ; and your members should be ready to give way^o each other in minor points, for the sake of union, where large and even vital interests are at Btake. It is in this spirit that I shall seek your suffrages ; and I may venture to hope that it will equally animate those who, if I am returned, will be my helpmates in a work which was never so difficult or full of responsibility to public men as now. I have ibe honor to be, Gentlemen, . .. Tour faithful servant, V. DILLON BELL. IMMIGRATION PRIZE PAMPHLET.
