WEIGHTS AND MEASURES.

TO THE EDITOB OP THE SOUTHLAND TIMES. Sib, — I see the Government have noticed the letters that appeared in your paper, relative to " W eights and Measures," but their advertisement is not what I think it ought to be, it merely says that " all persons desirous of comparing weights and measures, may do so at any reasonable time." Now, is'nt that a very vague advertisement, the dishouest storekeeper who has light weghts will not be desirous of comparing weights, and that advertisement does not force him to do so. And what time is " any reasonable time ;" what may be a reasonable time to one may not be so to another? would it not; have been far better if the authorities had said that Michael O'&eefe had been appointed Inspector of " Weights and Measures," and that all parties having in their possession light weights and short measures after a certain date will be lined ; or something to that eifect. . Now, Sir, another subject I wish to speak about is, why don't the police take up cattle for straying, as well as horses. I consider that the public in general are not afraid of horses, and the police seem to be of the same opinion, as they seetn only to arrest horses and let the cattle alone. If they are afraid of them what ought the public to be. Another subject is, why do the police allow so many empty cases to lie along the footpath of Tay and Dee streets ? Another subject — and the last — is the " Dog Nuisance.'' Is every dog in town registered ? Would'nt it pay the Government to appoint a person specially to look after all those matters instead of entrusting it to five or six, and each of them leaving it for the other to do. lam sure if every dog in town was registered it would realize over one hundred pounds a year. — I am, &c, OLD GEOWLE3. Feb. 28th, 1866.
