THE AULD FOLK AT HAME.
{From "Doric Lays," by John Or. Smith. The simmer days were gane, the flowers were wither'd a' j The leaves were fain fast within the broken shaw; The birds were tuneless a', the robin's chirm was tame, When I was ca'ed awa fra the " Auld Folk at Hame." My heart was like to break, the tear waß in my e'e, To leave my bairnhood's scenes an' cross the stormy sea; My grief I tried to hide. "Fareweel" I could'na name, The day I gad awa frae the " Auld Folk at Hame." I've roamed in sunny lands, where Nature's face is fair, And where she decks her brow wi' jewels rich an' rare ; They charmed my wonderin' e'e, — my hear they could'na claim, For that was far awa wi' the " Auld Folk at Hame." I often dreamed I saw my mither greetin' sair, And heard my faither's voice in holy e'enin' prayer; My little sisters three would lisp their brither's name, And wish that he was there wi' the " Auld Folk at Hame." The trees were a' in leaf, the gowans on the brae ; The little birdies sang then* joys on ilka spray ; The day when I cam' back, wi' riches and wi' fame, To cheer the weary hearts o' the " Auld Folk . at Hame." Our time flew brightly by, an* a' was bright an' clear, Till the auld folk dwined awa i' the howe time o' the year. My days are dark an' drear, there's naething now the same, But sune I'll meet abune wi' the " Auld Folk at Hame."
