Sib, — Being a gent, out of luck— a man of all work — I have been fast and seen life, and calculate that I am a tolerable good judge of character — learnt it when a detective — and if the following doggerel is fit for publication, please give it a corner. I am not a Policeman X., and this is my first effusion. VTAE OS 1 THEODOLITES. How whrn a very little child I watched two coves a-fighting, Oh ! Jimmy, how I've smiled To see them in the ring At it in earnest, Oh 'l A"paper war is now my song, Irvine v. Marchant is all the go ; With paper bullets hard and strong, And one or both will come to woe, All about some office, Oh t Marchant is a man of might, His nest is feathered well they say ; No. 1 to care for is quite right, If he only knows the way "; How to keep hia office, Ok I Irvine is a man of vigor, Bold and rabid in the fight, But he might provoke laughter* If .his boasted levgls are not right, * And he gets no office, Oh! , Softly yet, yoii lucky edger, No bed of roses rest your limb?, The doughty Irvine draws his lance Your riba to pierce, or see the ledger, And get into office, Oh ! Fight on, fight on, you noisey pests, Ride you hobbies till your tired ; "We read it all with unctious zest, ' Gb it till your blood is fired , ■;." To get or keep a billet, Oh! I fancy now I see these ■worthies, Hitting, roaring, fighting, struggling, Trying each to grasp the sweeties Aimed at in all their writing.
