THE STATE OR THE PROVINCE.

TO THE EDITOB OP THE SOUTHLAND TIMES." Sib, — Having no opportunity of ascertaining the working of the Government during the recess of the Provincial Council, except from the small items which appear from time to time in the newspapers, I am perhap3 hasty, but nothing seems to be doing. The long indisposition of His Honor the Superintendent is a plea which may be put in for mitigation of the censure which should be awarded to those who under present circumstances, appear to being doing little or keeping what they are doing perfectly quiet. I hay observed that the sale of land is not progressing satisfactorily, that the " Southland " steamer is not sold or being worked profitably, that the Town Board being defunct, no steps have been taken to establish another, that with the exception I of the Bluff Eailway no public works are going on ; and that the greenbacks are not yet paid. To my mind the public should be made acquainted with the doings of the government while the Council is not sitting. The late Superintendent was severely censured for what his government did during recess : (I believe more so than he deserved); and 1 for one feel anxious to know what is now \ being done, or contemplated. 1 send a few lines only, besau se I preK me that if I wrgte at length . upoa tU$

I many grievances of the province, you ; would deem it policy to suppress it. — I t am Sir, &c, A Large Investoe. > Feb 16,1866.
