PROVINCIAL GREENBACKS.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE SOUTHLAND TIMES. Sir, — If my memory serves me right, both you and your contemporary buoyed us up with the hope that our G-overnrnent greenbacks were to be paid very shortly. Were you not mistaken ; because I have applied several times to get one cashed, and can't get it. The last time, I was told that they did not think the General G-overnment would take them in any other way than in exchange for land. Are we to be forced to buy land, and will they cut up a section for us, to the extent of our greenbacks ; have they matured a system by which they can give from twenty to five hundi'ed acres to greenback holders ; if they have, they must possess infinitely more legislative ability than people have ever given them credit for. I hope they have, although at the same time I trow that if they have attempted it they will only have made matters " confusion worse confounded." But, I think Sir, that we are entitled to ask, and to ask determinedly, how these greenbacks are to be paid. Are the present surveyed Hundreds unsold to be cut up into such small allotments as to suit everybody holding these rather green securities ? I would like a reply. — I am, yours truly, An Up- Country Holpee.
