The Southland Times. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1866. GOLDFINDS AT RIVERTON.

NEW DIGGINGS AT COL AC BAY. A MAN OBTAINED ONE POUND WEIGHT GOLD FOE A MONTH'S WORKING. (From a Correspondent.) Biverton, 11th Februaiy. I have just learnt from Sergeant Morton, who some time since, under instructions from Mr. Commissioner Weldon, proceeded to the reputed new Diggings at Colac Bay (Mr. Hurst's Station,) 34 miles from Blverton, that he found several men at work, and all appeared fully satisfied with the result of their labors. One man showed him about lib of gold, being -his share for less than one month's work. The gold is very fine, only with much difficulty obtained, owing to the rough appliances now used in separating it from the blacksand in which it is found. It is stated that with the use of quicksilver any man on these diggings can earn from £5 to £6 per week. The Diggings are about three miles from the beach. There is six inches of ■wash-dirt, found on a false bottom at about one foot from the surface. There appears to be about seven miles of auriferous- country, and from the accounts received several creeks have been tested and gold found; also many spots on the beach with a similar result. The road from Riverton is very bad. I understand that a sample of gold taken from one of the claims now being worked — a dishful of of stuff— has been forwarded to Invercargill. Accounts received from Longwood are, also, highly encouraging.
