The entrance to the HoMtika is at present most passable, as at high water there is a broad open channel with from two to three fathoms and a half of water all over it. Strictly speaking there are two channels, although the one to the southward is exceedingly narrow, though deeper than that running to the N.W. The bar, however, between them can be safely crossed at high water by vessels of a moderate draught. — West Coast Times. Naval Peactice. — H.M. ships of war in port were yestarday engaged in great gun exercise, firine single and broadsiders of the heaviest vtmv °, - J?j ~**.mg iiie town was partially enveloped in smoke for some time after the firing had ceased. The whole Australian fleet is now in the harbour, under the command of Commodore Sir "William Wiseman. After the exercise of great guns, the pinnances of the fleet were lowered and sailing exercises gone through down the harbour and towards the gulf for come hours. — Southern Cross. The schooner Sangalier, which sailed from this port on the 20th October, under charter for the Molyneux, has never arrived at that port, nor has she been seen or heard of since the above date. There therefore remains but little doubt that she must have gone down. The Sangalier was a new vessel, only having made one or two voyages, and has well found in every respect. She was commanded by Captain Charles Clarke, and was owned in Launceston. Her agents here were Morrison, Law aud Co. — Daily Times. The Bruce has made another successful trip to Okarita, and the Lioness has returned from the Grey. Captain Whitford has determined not to work the Grey again, but remain entirely at HoMtika. The bar there at present consists of a narrow gut, with over three fathoms water in the centre, which shoals immediately to two fathoms and leßs directly the beacons are opened. The Lioness will make one more trip to the Grey, to tow in.the Reliance now in that roadstead, and will return immediately to Hokitika. — West Coast Times, Jan. 25.
