RIFLE SHOOTING.
The Riverton Rifle Volunteers have finished their firing for the General Government Prizes. Invercargill has been flogged. The Riverton Rifles have proved the value of constant practice. They made scores that have scarcely ever been excelled, -while the Invercargill score is far from being up to the ordinary average. We hope that this defeat •will create in our local company an ambition which will lead to a more constant practice, and that, at the next niatJi they will put in a better appearance. The largest number of points made by the Invercargill competitors was 25, while the Riverton men made their 51, 45, 45, and other Large scores. On the day after the match, Mr. M'Donald qualified himself to compete at Wellington, as representative for this Province. We subjoin a full and correct report : —
In shooting off ties, Eeid made a centre, bating Storie, who missed. M'Phee beat Mills, Eeid teat Erown, Crerar beat E. Wilson, Dunlop beating Bell, who again beat Laing. Private M'Donald is therefore the winner of the first prize ; this shooting was admirable, the total possible score, 20, being made at the first distance ; the other winners are Gr. Reid and Storie, whose shooting was also very good, as also Clode's. The day wa3 cold, with a strong wind down and across the range. The Invercargill Volunteers shot for three prizes on the 19 th, a strong wind blowing during the firing, affected its accuracy. The Riverton Volunteers, who have been most indefatigable in practice, completed upon the 26th. The firing commenced at 6 a.m., and concluded at 4 p.m., with a remarkably good average of 32.16 per man. The following is the result of each shot of the three winners.
