MAGISTERIAL DUTIES.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE SOUTHLAND TIMES. Sir, — Can you inform me what are the duties of the Resident Magistrate stationed at Campbelltown ? At the last two elections 1 noticed that he was particularly active in soliciting votes, and in otherwise assisung to the utmost of his ability to secure the return ol' the candidate he favored. When not occupied in this avocation, I notice that he is frequently to be seen in Invercargill. I would like to know it the General Government give instructions to Resident. Magistrates to act as election agents ; and also, if the duties of the Campbelltovvn Resident Magistrate can be as efficiently eouductod by his residing at Invercarssill as if he was a resident of the district to which he has been appointed ? If the latter be the case, surely the Province might be saved considerable expense by the 'iesidentMagistrate of Invercargill visiting (Jatnpbelitown when required. It appears to me that these questions should be answered. — I am, Sir, yours, &c, Inquirer. 19th Jan., 1866.
