THE WAITOTARA EXPEDITION.
Thh Wanganui Times, January 2, has the following with reference to the expeditionary force: — On Saturday last an expeditionary forhe left Wanganui en route for tbe Waitorara, and we can confidently say fully determined to crush rebellion in that direction. Major-General Chute accompanies the expedition, which consists of 30 of the Royal Artillery, with two 6-pounder guns, under Lieutenant Carre, 100 of H.M, 14th Regt., under Captain Eurneaux ; 150 of the Native Contingent uuder Major M'Donnell,. and consigns M'Donnell and Gudgeon, with -Dr. Walker as Surgeon to the contingent. Fifty more natives are to leave to-day ; and Major Von Teropsky with his Eorest Rangers will complete the force, unless General Chute should consider it advisable to take with him part of the troops now stationed at the Waitotara. The Native Contingent is composed ofthe Wanganui, Rangitiki, Aramo and other tribes, showing beyond a doubt that the natives oi these districts are loyal to a man. The public have the utmost confidence in General Chute, and fully hopes that this expedition will finally settLe the disturbances in these districts. The Hau-Haus in the Thames district (Auckland) have decided that no force is to be used or exercised to gain converts tc their religion in future. Many are becoming lukewarm in the cause, the novelty having worn off.
