COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
Southiand Times Office, Tuesday ,16th Jan., 1866. The month has not been remarkable for commercial activity. It has, however, justified our remarks in the last monthly Summary, viz : — " That the long depression has given place to a steady demand for all the leading articles, leaving fair profits to importers." Up to Christmas, business was steady, and comparatively speaking brisk but owing to the long holidays but little business has been transacted untd within the last few days. Upon the whole we may say that confidence is being re-established. The wool season being now at its height, in som<? measure, accounts for this, and the decision of the Government as to continuing the railway works has also had a powerful effect. Although not able to^cite any great sales of either property or merchandise, we can affirm that trade is steady, and property certainly not falling. Stocks are light. The following are the Custom House returns for the past two days : — Monday. Wine, 25 gals £5 0 0 Tuesday. 16th Jan.
Beer, 438 gala £32 17 0 Sugar, 4709 lbs 19 12 5 Tobacco, 574 lbs. ... ... 71 15 0 Tea, 415 lbs 10 7 6 Cordials, 22 gals 13 10 0 £148 1 11
