THE EAST COAST.
The HawJce's Bay Herald, of 26th December, learns " that Major Fraser, with 100 of the Colonial forces and 100 friendly natives, marched up the river on Saturday, and it was fully expected thafc hostilities would commence in the course of Monday. We may assume, therefore, that war has already broken out in the district, and that next news will be important. The position occupied by the enemy is at a place called Te Keinga, in Upper Wairo, better known as the Wairoa Falls, situated about twenty miles from th.i mouth of the river. The country is rough and broken, affording good shelter to the enemy; but fortunately happens that it is as well known to the friendly natives as to the Hau-haus. The rebel force is estimated at from 400 to 500 m6n. The Hau-hau force has been recruited from various sources — Uriweraj Tauranga, Opotiki, and elsewhere. The Poverty Bay fugitive tribes are headed by Anaru, Matetej | a quondam native teacher. The chief leader of the rebels, however, is Te Warn, a man of deterj mined character, but said to be, at the same time, ian open and generous foe. From Poverty Bay there is no important news.
