I am prepared to support to the utmost a political separation between the two principal Islands of New Zealand, believing it the only step likely to end the ruinous war which has so long drained the resources of the Colony, and especially of the Middle Island. I deprecate as unnecessary and injurious, any conflict between the pastoral and agricultura interests ; but should circumstances force them into collision, my support would inhesitatingly be given to the latter.
