In many parts they could not Lire men enough } even at these wages. "While such disparity exists in wages, and while worting-men know that labor ! is respected; as it is in tlioFree States, the exodus I from Europe will continue. ', " ' , ! THE PBINTEE3 ~ OJF NeV YoEK IND THEIR ' Empxotees. — A jSew .York letter says : — The I printers' unions in JBnglana may bo interested in { knowing that a, sifailar organisation here has been completely deafeated in an effort ' to enforce a uniform scale of, prices. A few weeks ago it ! advanced its demand "from forty-five to sixty cents I per thousand " ems." This caused some " kicking" by- the 'newspapers interested ; and, finally, the Tribune', taking advantage of a refusal on th» part of its compositors to insert an | advertisement sent) in *by tie Times •proprietors inviting applications for situations, turned out its "wrhole force, and, after struggling along for a week or two, succeeded injreorganisihg an entirely new staff. The Times proprietors then laid their plans, and ou-Saturday last discharged all the compositors in their employ belonging to the union. This : brought masters fco^W crisis, and on Monday , evening the union, after a stormy meeting, virtually dissolved itself by passing a voto permitting any i member to work anyyhere and at any price he j might please. . The I Times compositors then ' i returned almost in" a Bb.dy to apply for their old situations, and as- manr of them as -were wanted ■'! were taken "on" the- paber' again, "after signing a ' pledge withdrawing froia the printers' union, and - [ pledging their honour Ithat they would not join- '! any similar organisation' as long as they were i employd upon llie paper.
