Tlie steamer Waiteinata, recently constructed at Auckland, has been ' built, says the Southern Cross, to the order of the Waitemata Steam Ferry Company, to ply between Auckland and the North Shore -, and she 'is said by competent judges to bo well adapted for the trade. She is constructed entirely of New Zealand timber; and is the first steamer built in tlie 'Waitemata river. The > following are-her dimensions-.— length -of keel, /0 feet; length overall, . 74 feet; breadth of beam, 16 feet ; breadth over paddle-boxes, 26 feet- : 'depth of. hold, 5. feet ; : and is S3 tons burthen. She is fitted with' rudders at eachiend to obviate the necessity of turning, and is consequently built sharp at both ends. She is coppered and copper fastened, and is a thoroughly strong built vessel. She "has three keelsons, one of which is nine inches square, and the other two. seven inches 'square. 'Her timbers, knees, and breast-hooks are four inches square, her paddle-wheels, 10 x 5 ; paddle-beams," 10 x 10 ; and the deck-beams, 7x6. She has two stringers, forty feet m lengi h, 12 x 6 ; -withtwo bolts through every timber. The planking is 2-inch, and tha shell li-mcli. She has a good airy and commodious cabin for passengers, about ten feet in. length by eight feet in breadth, which is to be suitably fitted up. - There -will be a deck above- the engine-room, and a space oh each side-to allow passengers to pass from one end to the ofrher. 3n addition to hcv passencrer accommodation, which, will he ample, room will be' reserved for the conveyance of cargo and cattle when required. For engine and boiler, Messrs. Yickery and Mansfield are the contractors. The engine is "to be of 35-horse power, with, a tubular ;bpaerT4 : X:'7- yA y : : n y : y ■;. l During the greater part of Friday and baturday the 0 2nd and 3rd December, the Resident Ma^trate at Russell was occupied in investigating the' case: brought agahist the crew of the ' steamer Aphrasia, for wilful and malicious mjm-y to that vessel, and .the charge of .perjury against three of them. After a lengthened exammation the Bench came to the decision that- in the absence of the -captaui7 (who.has. made himself, scarce) there was not" sufficient evidence to send the case before a iurr, and the men were accordingly discharged. Oiie of the crew, who after being discharged was sworn in as evidence by the pro=ecution, said thaj, he knew_the captain destroyed the log-book,: after -the wreck of the vessel," and that he believed the . captain threw the screw of the pump overboard. The steamerhas not vet broken up, and noo'ne seems to have the slightest interest in her. I should say there is. a good deal of material' worth -saving even id the -vessel could nbthe got off. The Falcon arrived at Ru=seh on Saturday evening, and went up at daylight this morning to the head ...of deep water navigation, on Ihe way 'to the -coal mmes, about five miles from here— Otago Daily Times. y The s s V Alliambra, lei't.-Hobson's Bay on the afternoon: of the l7th7 inst.7 and arrived at TBluff Harbor.at 2 p.m., yesterday, she discharged a portion of her cargo, and sailed shortly after for r Dunedin and Canterbury hi company witlr the Airedale. The Alhambra has been on the shp at Williamstowh. and.received a , thorough overhaul. She made a "splendid run down: She has some further cargo for the- Bluff, wliich she wnl discharge on her return -"from. the North.
