REJECTION OF THE IMPERIAL GUARANTEE.
The steamship Wanganui brings important news from Auckland. A new Tariff Act lias been passed—operation commences immediately. The following are the new rates. Su^ar, coTfee, fire-arms, gunpowder, and articles hitherio free remain unchanged. Other articles are as fo'lows :-^- ' . '' Spirits and strong waters of every kind, sweetened or otherwise, of any strength not.exceeding the strength of proof by Syke's hydrometer, and so on in proportion for any greater strength than the strength of proof—the gallon, 12s. . Tva—the pound, 6d. ■ . Tobacco—the pound, 2s. 6d. ... - . : . Wine, inswood. containing less than twenty-five per' cent, of alcohol, of a specific gravity of :825. at the; temperature of 60 degrees of Fahrenheit'sthermometer—the gallon, 4s. ■'/;■■:■■.. Wine, in bottlo, ■ ontaining less than twentyfive per cent, 'of alcohol, of a specific gravity of •825..at. the temperature of 60 degrees Fahi'enlieit's thpmometer-7-the gallon, 53. Ale, beer, cider, and perry, in wool—the,gal; lon,'9d. Cigars an-.l snuff—the pound, 4s. 6d. Cutlery, hardware, plated-ware, hollow-ware, and ironmongery of all sorts, and candles and soap of all sorts—the cwt., 4s. Manufactures of silk, cotton, linen, and woollen, and all articles manufactured therefrom ; drapery, haberdashery, hosiery, millinery, furs, hats, boots, shoes, confeelionory, bottled fruits, dried fruits,. mustard, olive oil, - pickles, preserves, sauces, spices, and oilmen's stores of all kinds, (measuring outside the packages)—the cubic foot, ss. The House of Representatives, on the motion of the. Colonial Treasurer, has rejected the offer of the Home Government to guarantee the Ono Million of the {Three- Million Loan, on the grounds that the Act of the Imperial Parliament guaranteeing that ldan required the territorial revenue (the land revenue of the. different New Zealand: Provinces,' and wliich belong exclusively to the Provinces, are not touched by the G-eneral- Government of" New Zealand) to> be pledged in security of that loan ; and because such a measure would greatly prejudice the rights of the creditors from whom the Provinces have borrowed money—such creditors" having really a prior claim,' Tfee Assembly has passed a measure for
a loan of one m : llion, at an interest 'of 8 per cent., for which, of course,, they will not solicit any Government guarantee. - The Panama Mail Service Bill has been passed.
