THE LEASING OF THE JETTY.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE SOOTHJiAND TIMES. Sib,—ln your issue of 9th December, I find a letter signed ".Justice," relative to the letting of the InVercargul Jetty.- I think,. Srr£" Justice " -has not gone far enough in the exposure of this little business. In the first, place, the advertisement calling for tenders says—particulars to be had on application/to the i Superintendent's - ofHce'. Now, Sir, what ..particulars didjany, onerpbtauv: upon application ? Why, .the only information ■was the so-called conditions. • I call tliem—^notes and erasures on sundry scraps of paper. '■''■■ Noir,-I- willjisk; -was-ihelinformation-tli&.public:. obtauied at the Superintendent's office in any way equivalent to the particulars the officer ha charge of the-- Jetty-possessed•?—■ I- say,- distincUy, -no^.. the Government, did not. place, the .public .in ,so good a position^ as "the' officer above alluded to, that gentleman being; paid: from, the public funds to have a decided advantage; ovei* the public in tendering for tlie Jetty. Againpwhen the requisitionists^respectfully pointed put to the Superhi-, tendent flic error that had b: een committed by accepting a tender totally at variance with, advertisement and conditions, that gentleman, ori^rid' December, replies with so much- evasiveness that the Government are unable to see: that-exception can be taken to its decision, as all tehderers neces; sarny based their calculatipn,on anticipating *a, certain amount of''tonnage ;tra, flic ;; and the Gp--vernmenfc had the same data to: guide it deterinnij-. ing the comparatiyo ehgibility of tenders. /Now, Goveniment's; explanation as to how it arrived at a. deei4jon,_ is no reply tojthe protest^ grounded on tlie tender^heing!^accepted^ quite contrary with the conditions. _.^^hj^ men|pLat the ambMt accepted per: ton upon the aame (certain amount of tonnage traffic) as some of the tenders by the year". I say the amount accepted per ton will not realise as much by sPme hundreds of pounds as was.,tendered for it; by^the year. Surely the requisitionists will not quietly sit by and see about the only-'at .present reproductive'work . the Srovincepossesse sacrificeds against the wish of so many directly interested', but at once introduce the mafer~atSpfopCT»quar6ers^ that fresh-tenders may be called for on tho^^broad principle, and I will youch-the public treasury will be considerably. augmented 1 beyond the amount the present arrangement wiU do if, earned, into effect.. In most public offices, where tenders are not hi accordance with specifications (as in this case), they are not . entertained. I, dp not, deny that the.letthig by the ton is not the best way ;• but certainly lef the public know that it is to be let by r the ton, and a jnuci^larger price will be 1 obtained; orT- am -not a i*.:,,° ..„ :: _p,COLONIST.,^ IriTcrcargill, 15th December; IS6I.
