The Southland Times. FRIDAY, DEC. 9, 1864.

We were agreeably disappointed last night to find that the two parties in the Council were able and willing to co-operate in taking some action for relieving the Province from its difficulties. Perhaps the report of the committee appointed to inquire into the financial state of Southland, might have been more elaborate and explanatory, but on the whole it I very well answered the purpose for which it was intended. The adoption of tne memorial to the House of Representatives which we publish elsewhere, and the appointment of Mr. Pearson to proceed to Auckland, and obtain the best terms possible from the G-eneral Grovermnent, is also a cause for congratulation. . The only drawback is, as was suggested in the House last night, that the energy of the Council has been too long delayed, and that before Mr. Pearson's arrival in Auckland the Assembly may- have gone down for the Christmas holidays. Be that as it may, the business of Southland was to act as quickly as possible. "We never anticipated that the financial state of Southland would be thoroughly in-, quired into by the Assembly during the early part of its session. There was too much business of urgent colonial importance on hand, to warrant us in sup-; posing that the case of a Province of minor importance, would meet with immediate attention ; but there was, and still is a hope that temporary assistance may be afforded 'with a view to paying off the more pressing of the liabilities, pending the deliberation of the Grenerai Assembly. Mr. Peabson has an ,. opportunity earning golden opinions from all men, and doubtless he will exert himself to the utmost to ensure success. „ ; .
