COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
SoTTTHIAttD TIME 3 OFFICE. Thursday Evening. The amount, of revenue collected at, the Customs for the la3t three days is as follows 1 — Tuesday, £60 Bs.9d. 5 Wednesday, £104 Os. lid. 5 Thursday, £56 Bs. Id. In all, £221 175. 9d. ;.„ .....;. -■:■■■» The past week has had littleto mart it in the way of trade. "What demand there has been for gopcU haa been at fair prices. Haras, baoon, and butter have gone off in considerable quantities, at a slight advance on former quotations, whioh, we J believe, have been chiefly taken for the- Nokomai. Flour remains without alteration ; spirits have been dull after last week's auction sales. Other articles move off very slowly, and building materials are entirely neglected, several lots of timber having been offered at auction without any considerable sales being effected, and the Jane has sailed for Adelaide with a large quantity on board for whioh purchasers could not be found here. Wool oontihues to arrive in quantities, but the merchants are chary of buying, and offer a shade under last year's prices. A sale by auction 13 announced for the 20th mat ; but for its success -we surmise that other than local buyers must be relied on. L^-__i
We take the following from the Otago Duily Times, of 6th Dec :— ' Though the business of the past week has exhibited some activity, yet transactions have been on the whole for moderate amounts. ; Orders from the interior are notsoheayy as at the corresponding period last year, which is not, however, a symptom of decline in the actual amount of business done, but is most likely attributable to the greater dependence which the storekeepers now feel upon being able to despatch goods at any time, irrespective of weather and other causes of delay. Flour remains unaltered, with little doing, except for actual requirements. Adelaide is selling at £26 ; Californian and Chilian, at £20 to £22. In teas and sugars the market has been slightly easier since the last large auction sale. Cork butter has become a drug. Scarcely any price induces its going into consumption. Colonial continues to arrive freely. Sinclair's bacon and hams (new) command ready sale, the former atlOd. to lld&.tho latter at Is. Id. to Is. 2d. Some old stock of this brand in the market is offering lower. Tobaccos. — Buyers have been supplied at auction. Quotations are difficult to make in consequence of the disinclination to buy except for immediate wants. A. sliglit improvement 13 perceptible upon oilmen's stores. Stocks have become more moderate ; the heavy duty on these goods has hitherto, in the presence of an amply supplied market, helped to entail losses to shippei-s, particularly upon brands not considered the best. Salt has been bought up, and holders are now asking £4 for small lots. _ # j Hennessy's and Martell's brandies remain in first hands at the asking price, which is 9s. to 9s. 3d. for considerable parcels. ] Horse feed remains at low prices. The quantity held by the trade is considerable ; improvement may not be expected at present.
