THE SUPERINTENDENCY.

.. TO THE EDITOR OF THE SOUTHLAND TIMES. '■ Sir, — In common with my fellow colonists, I have taken a keen interest in the question as to who was our future Though not approving of all the acts of Dr. Menzies, I thought, and still think that he is by far and away the best man for the post. That he has made errors Ido not deny ; but sir, can you point to the man who is free from such ? You have invariably, and, I must say, consistently, opposed the late Superintendent, and on more than one occasion you promised that a better man would step forward. Has that been the case? 1 say no. First, your pet candidate, Mr. Holmes, declined the otuee ; than a mysterious announcement was made, that " the coming man " would declare himself before the Council met ; aud again, that this unknown individual was so far superior to Dr. Menzies, there could be no doubt as to the result. What is the result ? Where is your paragon of perfection ? Is Theopliilus Heale, Esq., the gentleman ? and if so, what claim has he to the suffrages of the Councd? Yourself, in "leaders," and several correspondents,; in .letters,, have done that gentleman " yeoman's service," in writing him . up -, but I am either too obtuse or too ignorant to see that all your eftbrt3 have succeeded in making out a good case for him. On the contrary, in my humble opinion, you have miserably faded. But, allowing for a moment that he is the better man, would not the Council be stultifying itself— or rather, I should say, all his supporters— seeing that the gentleman is not a member of the Council!? I chink so, considering all' that has been 1 said 1 at meetings of constituencies, in candidates' addresses,' and on the various hustings. Ido not : : wish to occupy much of your space, otherwise I could put a low pertinent queries as to what chance there is of our difficulties being removed by Mr. Heale. I only hope that on Wednesday the Council Will re-consider tho matter, and ifnot uuammonsly, at ieu&t by an overwhelming majority, choose the right man — Dr. Menzies — as Superintendent. — -I am, etc., TISS. Waikivi, sth December, 1864. pg t — Since penning tho above," a friend from town informs me that you are so Heale antiMenzios infatuated that" you will not insert it. I trust, for the credit of tho Southland Press, that tho statement is without foundation ; but, if truo, I insist on this being published in your advertising coluuiub, and I' will pay your usual charge. T, [Oar correspondent is correot in supposing that his letter would be inserted, but is wrong in thinking we aro partisans of Mr. Heale. Wo idontify ourselves with no party, but use our right as public journalists to criticise the actions of all. —Ed. S. T.l
