CANTERBURY.
The papers contain nothing of importance. We take the subjoined from the Press : — There haa been very little alteration in the betting, with the exception of Shillelagh having come with a rush — 750 to 50 having been taken in one bet about him. Otto and Nourmahal also have an upward tendency. The other horses remain at their former quotations. The following are the prices obtainable about the undermentioned horses : — 4 to 1 agst. Otto Bto 1 " Nourinahal j 10 to 1 " Shillelagh. The wires for establishing telegraphic communication throughout the Middle Island are in a forward state of progress. The communication between Southland and Dunedin will probably soon be open, while for this part of the country wires have already been landed at Waikouaiti and i Oamaru ; and as the posts have been ready for some time, and the engineers are almost prepared j to proceed, a very brief interval -will elapse until j there will be telegraphic communication between j the Southland Bluff and Canterbury. We do not | know that similar activity in this matter prevails in the latter Province to complete the communication through it. Our agent at Kaiapoi informs us that he has been permitted to extract the following information from a private letter from the West Coast respecting the new rush that had taken place 50 miles south of the Biver Grey. Two Maoris are reported to have procured 19 oz. of gold in one week with a tin dish only. Some white men succeeded in getting three pounds weight of gold in three weeks. Nearly all the diggers have left the Greenstone Creek for tbo new fields. The gold that has been found is rough and coarse, and the ground where it has been found is of a slaty nature. a -
