Thedantern of: the new lighthouse at Taiaroa Head has lately been put up, and the preparations for exhibiting the light regularly are being ' au\ auced with due alacrity. Mr Benjamin 11 al- ; liuay will nil the situation of head light- keepi-r; j anu Mr. John' Williamson, the present signaniaster and light-keeper- at the Heads, has reCetveu the appointment, of assistant light-keeper. They will, be instructed in their duties by Mr. Carnoctian, an experienced light-keeper, formerly in the service of ihe Commissioners of Northern Lights, and who! latel* arrived in the Province under an engagement with the Provincial Government.; — Ol ago Daily Times, 23rd in st. The short survey made by the Government -steamer £t..-Xilda, in the neighborhood of Wai papa Point^did not result in the discovery of ih"s"rock upon which several steamers are alleged to have struck/ though soundings were taken within a considerable circle, including within its range the bearings given by the commanders of the several v. ssels. Oupt. 'Ihomas Robertson, secretary to the Marine Board, by whom th..survey was conducted, has, however, ascertained from some reliable sources of information, that a reef aoes exist on the coast thereabout, but not in the exact neighborhood described by the captains of tho steamers which have struck, and it is probable, or at least advisable, that the present short survey should be followed by a survey more complete in its character, and including both the localities in which the reef is suspected to exist. It is ascertained that upon the same reef a brig struck last year, remaining hard and fast for an hour, arid there is no knowing what other and more serious disasters might occur. By the present survey it Traa i'ounu. that in the neighborhood of Waipapa -withm the bearing published as those within which the steamers struck, the bottom was a rocky one, with a pretty regular depth of water. In making the survey, and the other work for which the trip was undertaken, Captain Kobe-t---son was accompanied by Captain Louden, as an oiiicer of the Provincial Government. — Ibid, 22ud inst.
