THE MURDER OF MR. BRIGGS— LATEST PARTICULARS.
During the past week, the prisoner Franz Muller has been .visited almost every day, ; either by Mr. Beard, his solicitor or one of that gentleman's clerks, and active preparations are being •made for his. defence.. He still solemnly, declares that he is innocent of the crime of which he is accused, and persists in the assertion that he had .purchased the articles, that were found in, his possession. .He explains, the reason he made the false statement, as to their having been in his ppsseision for two years, by saying that when he saw the officers he suspected that something was wrongin respect to the property he hadsopurchasedj and in his confusion he made the false statement. He still declares that he knows nothing of the murder. At present the public is aware that the chief evidence against the- prisoner, except the possession of the stolen property, is that of the cabman Matthews, who speaks topurchasing the hat that was found in the carriage where Mr. Briggs was supposed to have been murdered by the prisoner ; and it is said that at the examination to-day some extraordinary disclosures will be made with reference to this witness. 4*-
