Wh'enjtlie new committee was elected, ire were informed that a complete change, a thorough, re-., modeling, of tho whole syitem of management was to be carried out ; not only would the members find r the i. reading-room lighted up in^tha j , evenings, but a cheerful fire_ would give an appearance of comfort to the apartment ; they would find the table well supplied with newspapers, and, 1U time, the shelves filled -with.^ books. Yet not one of these promises has been ful/lllecl, and Since the Southland News was published triweekly, there i are only three local pipers to ba found .on the table during the week. The! English Mail arrired in town on Wednesday evening ; the public received their home papers' next morning ; this is Saturday night, and not a home paper or periodical is ,to be seen at the Mechanics' Institute.
