The poll was taken r on Friday last, between the hours of nine a m and four p m Quite an un» uiual excitement^was kept up during the day, and the contest from first to laat was a keenly fought .one. I ' Four o'clock having comeTound >r the Returning Officer, followed by the candidates and their friends, appeared on the hustings, and the result of the ■pofirng -was declared a» follows — ___ — Dr. Menzies 171 Mr. Macdonald '-V ] Mr jCaiaer' 136 Mr. Davies ... . 127 Mr. Tarlton . r . 122 ( Mr. Monkman 116 Mr. Chalmers .7 ... 84 - Mr. Oiborne' ' . . < 8 The E.ETTTEKIKG- Opfceb thereupon declared Dr Menzies, and Messrs. Maedonald, Calder,'and'i -Davies 1 , duly elected members of the Provincial Council of Southland, for the'distrfct of Invercargill. , These gentlemen then returned thanks for the honor conferred upon them, and the unsuccessful candidates likewise returned thanks for the support th'ey had received and the confidence which had been reposed invthem. A large concourse of, the inhabitants was present at the declaration of the poll, and the enthusiasm displayed, as the name of each successful ; candidate was "called out, was at times intense. Ererytihing, however, passed off in the most orderly manner. „ r A cordial vote of thanks to Mr Hare, the Returning Officer, terminated the proceedings. ♦
