Pavies, one of the candidates for the representation of Invercargill in Council, was not present atthe nomination yesterday, hut his proposer, Mr. .John Munro, waa authorised to make the necessary explanation for his absonco. It was to the following effect :-~-That he had been compelled to go to Dunedin, iii (jrder to wake arrangements whereby tiff would be enabled to meet the demands of hia workmen on the Northern Rail--way, for labor done 'jpriov to the official opening .p£ tha lino. ."Ho (Mr. Davies) had beau reauoßted fey- 4 the Superintendent to employ a sufflpient number of hands,, e/q thafc ths raUw^y might be Ppone.d/ before tho, .l*ty " puf go)».K Vnsi ; leffc^ and ; s>!r ti>i»

When, however, he had come to the Treasury, he was told that all the money at their disposal was some £700! This state of matters had compelled him to seek assistance^ elsewhere, and Mr. Munro had no doubt that this explanation of Mr. Davies' absence on the day of nomination would be satisfactory to his supporters.
