THE WEATHER. Meteoeoxog-ioaXi Observations DtTßnra- the j Month ov October, in Setbht Yeaes. October, 1864.— Remarkably " dry weather has prevailed throughout the month, and rain is now most urgently needed. The spring, upon the whole, is a decidedly rbackward and unfavorable ®ne ; this is chiefly owing to the unusually low night temperature, the thermometer having on sixteen nights fallen below 40 deg., while on the surface of the ground it has generally been- at or' below the freezing point. The prevalence of E. and S.E. winds, and the comparative absence of strong breezes, have been other peculiar features in the meteorology of the month, October commonly being the, windy month, par excellence, of the year. However, three heavy ; gales occurred : from the eastward on the 9th, from the N.W. on the 26th (both dry, arid preceded by a rise of barometer) ; and from 10 p"m. on the 28th to sunset on the 29th, one of the most furious hurricanes from the N. to N.W. ever experienced here. It was preceded, Ist, by a sudden fall of barometer from 29-80 to 29-12 inches, 2nd, by an increase of temperature from 49 deg. to 72 deg., 3rd, by a decrease of humidity from •87 to *55, both equally rapid : the appearance of the sky and clouds was also very striking. The gale commenced at N., and gradually veered round to N.N.W., N.W., W.N.W. and finally to W., just before it lulled. All the gales were preceded by a short night fog of about an hour's duration, which may be generally considered an almost decisive indication of a gale. A fog of this description, if coming and. leaving suddenly and unexpectedly, and only lasting about an hour, must not be confounded with the. " fine weather fog," -which is accompanied by totally- different readings of the instruments, and which, in the :«aorning, resolves itself successively into nightcloud, cumulous and ciro-cumulous. The mean barometrical pressure was 29773; inches ; the maximum 3020 Inches oh the Ist and 2nd, the minimum 29 - 12 inches on the 28th. The mean temperature of the air was 52-2 deg., which is two degrees below the average of seven years. The highest day temperature was 74 deg. on the 7th, the lowest 29 deg. on the Ist. The total range of temperature during the month was therefore 45 deg. The mean degree of humidity was -63 (the least recorded in 22 months), saturation being represented by 1-00, not once approached. The air was driest on the sth, when the degree was only "49. Tke mean temperature of evaporation was 46 - 3 deg., and of the dew-point 40"l deg.
