We beg to remind the members of; the Volunteer Fire Brigade that .their first meeting for the transaction of business will take place this evening in the Union Hotel, Tay^streefc, at eight o'clock. From a notice. which appears in our advertising columns,, itT will be observed that, the .complimentary benefit ' ; to^Miss Hetta Fleming has been postponed froni to-morrow eveniiig to the evening .. of Friday first, on account of the election meeting of Dj\' Menzies taking /place on -the former, date. The tickets issued for.fo-mprrow evening are available for Friday. ; ' - "~ ! '■ ' - - ' : v The Comniissioriers o£ -tiie New Zealand Exhibition at Dunedin have given notice, that on and after the 18th instant goods will' be ' received' at the building. Possession of the building has been given them, and they intend to; adhere to their original intention to open the Exhibition on the 2nd of January. : n The Superintendent of Otago has issued a proclamation to tlie effect, that the former proclamation prohibiting the importation of cattle from Southland into that Province is now rescinded. Information' was given to the police last night of a robbery from the person in Deetstreet. The money missing is stated to be about £8 ; the parties will figure in the Police Court this morning. : " ■'- We have been informed that smoke was ob« served issuing yesterday from the front of the Empire Hotel, Dee-street,^but the danger, if any, must have been quickly averted^ as the police were not made aware of the circumstance. of the/exhibition committee was held on Friday last in the office . of His Honor the Superintendent. The secretary, had to- report that few articles had .yet been forwarded, and only a few more had been promised ; it wa« therefore determined to' adjourn the meeting till this day week, when there would be a full statement made of what articles the committee would have at their disposal. The question then would be determined whether it would ,be advisable to forward the articles to Dunedin under government auspices, or allow, exhibitors to dp so on their own account. Great apathy still appears to eiwt in this province on the question of the New .Zealand Exhibition, and it is with pain that we observe the local committee becoming similarly affected. The adjourned inquest into the origin of the late fire was held on the evening of Friday last, in the Union Hotel, Tay-street. Mr. K. M'lvor was re-called, but his evidence was not Mr. M'Pherson, agent of the Victorian Insuranco Company ; Mr. Wardley, storeman 7 to Messrs. W. Miller and Co., ' and : two of the CUstorn-houso officials, were likewise examined, but their evidence had no direct bearing on the origin o£ the fire. The jury returned a Verdict as follows -. — "That the late fire in Tay-street, on the morning of Monday, the 31st October, 1864, "commenced in an unoccupied building, owned by Mr. Clerke, but how it originated there is no evidence to show." The following rider accompanied the verdict : — " The jury, regret that the result "of this enquiry is so unsatisfactory : : but wish it to be recorded &• their unanimous opinion that onthe part of the authorities and insurance companies' agents prempt energy has been shown to discover the origin of the fire. The jury consider; that the evidence poiDts most clearly to a suspicion of foul play, and further suggests the opinion that had there been an efficient fire brigade, with a proper supply of water, many of the adjoining, buildings burnt do-mi might have been saved." Payable gold has. bepn struck at Sflverotream, near the West Taieri Ebad ford, within eight miles of Dunedin. * The auriferous ground is thought to be of; small extent, and will not sup* port a large population. A prospecting claim has been granted. i •■ • . ? . =■ . Speaking of electioneering matters, the Mount Alexander Mail l (Victoria) Jias the following :— " At one of the.pqliing-bdoths in the Castlemaine district, a novel ■ sight was witnessed,. A coach filled with ladies drove up, and the fair occupants alighted and recorded their votes, to a man, for. a bachelor. candidate,— Mr. Zeal." .... . Mri. Morris and; Miss Hall continue their entertainment at the Theatre Royal to rather thin houses. A considerable change for the better has taken place in the? selections. Mr. Morris' imitation of the violin is very clever. A sad boat accident' is reported to the WaJcatip Mail by' its Maori Point' correspondent. It occurred there : on the 7th inst. Two ferrymen were proceeding to re-fasten a boat, the fastenings •f which, had been carried ■ away fay the flood, when, in teumg out the 'rope, it caught in the gratings, and, straightening suddenly, caught both men in the breast; and precipitated them into the current. One of them was rescued' by the merest chance, but the other has not yet been found.
