"We have it ou good authority that, at the urgent request ot a great number of his friends," Mr. Calder has consented to stand for Invercargill. IVfr. .Jabez Hay, whom we mentioned some time ago as having been requested to become a candidate for election as one of the members for the Waihopai district, has at last consented to stand. The requisition, aud Mr. Hay's reply, appear in another part of this issue. Mr. Hay, it will be observed, is an opponent of the new Land Act, aud is in favor of assisted immigration when the financial position of the Province warrants the expenditure of money for that purpose. He will vote for the repeal of the present Education and Roads Ordinances, ife proposes a tramway for the East Road, to be constructed by the settlers, and the expense thereof eventually refunded by the Government. He will also support any measure conferring extended powers to the Town Board. By giving more power, and attaching honor to the office, he holds that some inducement is offered to active citizens to take an interest in civic affairs. He likewise states it as his opinion that " the powers and relative position of the Superintendent and Executive ought to be definitely settled before the election of Superintendent.'' . Mr. VV. H. Nurse, who occupied a seat at the last session of' the Provincial ; 'Council, has announced his intention to become a candidate for re-election, as one j of the members for the Apariina District. The requisition and the reply will be fouud in our advertising columns. Mr. Stuart has announced his intention to meet the electors of the Waikivi District this evening, at six o'clock, in Freeman's Wailuvi Bush Hotel. - The name of Captain Howell has been mentioned in connection with the representation of the Aparima District. As will be seen from a table ,of ..the; days of nomination and poll, given -eke-; where, the ; first elections to be decided; are those for the Districts of Campbell- \ town, Oteramika, and' Riverton.
