THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.

Very little intelligence has reached ! us during the present week on the subject of the elections for the new Provincial Council. No new move has been taken, bo far as we have learned, with regard to the candidates for the representation of Invercargill. Doubtless, this quietude has been caused by the stronger counterexcitement manifested in the celebration of the opening of the Oreti Railway. "We have been informed that Mr. Cuthbert Cowan will be opposed in his candidature for the representation of the Oreti District, by Mr. Peter M'Kellar, settler, Wainiiiu "Plains. A requisition j sio-ned by a large proportion of the settlers in'the district is being got up in his favor. A smart contest may therefore be expected. A meeting of the electors of the New River District took place at Ryal Bush on Friday last. There are now two candidates in the field for the representation of this district, and on this occasion Mr. M'Clure, who has come forward to oppose Mr. Harry Armstrong, was present. He explained his views to the meeting. He commented in strong terms on the conduct of the late Council, and considered that they grossly failed in their duty. He is an opponent of the Roads and Education Ordinances.
