Public Notices. NEW ZEALAND GENERAL -♦— :, , • .-.: rpHE time is rapidly approaching when the -*- Electric Telegraph will be extended throughou New Zealand, affording vastly increased facilities for communication between the various cities and towns of the colony. The position which Campbellfcown (Bluff Harbor) occupies as the first port of arrivaland last of departure for the steamers carrying Her Majesty's English and Australian Mails, as well as its growing importance as a port of call for sailing vessels of large tonnage, and the fact that it is the southern terminus of the New Zealand Telegraph System, and of the Railways already initiated in Southland, which eventually will traverse the whole of the Middle Island, has induced us to establish at this point a GffiNERAL TELEGRAPHIC AG-ENCY. j The objects we have in view are threefold : — Firstly. — Receiving and transacting all Mercantile Business in which the telegraphic wire may be called into requisition. Secondly. — Supplying the Press throughout New Zealand with the latest English and Australasian Intelligence, including the state of Markets, Shipping, and Q-eneral News from all parts of the Colonies. I Thirdly. — Transacting Telegraphic Business of a miscellaneous character for the public at large. The marked success which has attended like undertakings both in Europe and the Colonies, when conducted with energy and intelligence, and the long experience of the projectors in mercantile business, and their thorough knowledge of the duties of a Press Correspondent, combined with a determination to devote their whole attention to j the Agency, emboldens thorn to solicit public patronage Arrangements aro already in progress for the formation of a wide- spread system of Telegraphic Agencies throughout the whole of the Australian Colonies, in connection with the " NEW I ZEALAND GENERAL TELEGRAPHIC \ AGENCY." j The strictest secrecy, together with promptitude and accuracy in all affairs ontrusted to us, may bo relied on. j Business will be commenced immediately on the completion of the Electric Telegraph between Dunedin and Campbelltown (Bluff Harbor). SKCEETART (pro lem.J : John Macdonald, Esq. Temporary Offices : — Ese-steeet, Iktebcabgued. rnHE object contemplated by the promoters of X this undertaking is the development of the agricultural resources of the Province. Immense tracts of land are constantly being taken up, and I if the occupiers of such lands turn their attention to ordinary farming pursuits, there "will soon be a j large yield of cereals. But up to this time, whatever the quantity of corn grown, there has been no means of bringing it into use for human food ; and we have a considerable population daily consuming flour, every ounce of which is imported from the neighboring colonies. If the Southland farmers can find a market for their wheat in Invercargill, they will soon produce sufficient breadstuffs for the wants of the Province, and eventually make Southland one of the sources of supply to Northern Australia. The Company will consist of One Thousand Shares, of £10 each ; the liability of each share, holder is- limited to the amount of his shares. It is intended to purchase a piece of land — say an acre or more— in the vicinity of the Jetty, or some equally Suitable locality, and to erect thereon a .Mill for the manufacture of flour and oatmeal, and a Malt-house — the kiln of which would also serve for drying the oats to be ground, and any wheat which may require it. It is proposed to construct the Mill of timber, strongly framed and braced together, the Enginehouse of brick. The Malt-house should also be of brick. Store 3 for wheat and flour, either of brick or timber. The amount of business which may reasonably be expected at starting is as follows : — Estimating the population of the Province at eight thousand, there wil be an annual consumption of about fourteen hundred tons of flour, the produce of sixty-four thousand bushels of wheat, all of which might be Provincial grown, if the farmers would produce it at a price to exclude importation. I The proposed MjII, driving tlnve pairs of stones j three hundred days of twelve hours, and dressing three hours each day, would turn out about that quantity. | The consumption of oatmeal is not very great, but a little might be done in it, and the mill would drive a pair of stones for grinding oats whilst dressing wheat meal. The Malt-house might be constructed capable of turning out three or four hundred bushels per ■week for tliirty ■weeks, if a supply of barley could bo depended on ; any quantity not required for the home market would find a ready sale in Melbourne or Sydney. Referring to the statement made above as to the quantity of flour annually required to meet the wants of the Province ; if an average price of twenty pounds per ton be assumed, we find that twenty-eight thousand pounds per annum has to be raised in the Province, and sent abroad in exchange for one article of food alone. It is unnecessary to point out how much benefit would result from the retention of so large a sum in the Province, besides the employment of an increased number of agricultural laborers, and the creation of a class of small farmers. Having thus laid the prospects and advantages of the company before the public, the members of the provisional committee appeal to their fellowcolonists to aid them in realizing an undertaking fraught with such important results, and trust that the speedy completion of the share list will prove that the people of Southland are not indifferent to their true interests. Applications for shares must be made in tho £orm annexed, accompanied by a deposit of ss. per sharo. FORM OF APPLICATION FOE SHAEES. As evidence of the fact, they were awarded the prize gold medal at the Great Exhibition 1862, and at the Paris Exhibition 1861. These machines make the tight lock-stitch — the only one which cannot be ravelled — with the rotating hook — a great improvement on the shuttle, as it is far more durable, and not near so liable to get out of order. Wheeler and Wilson's machines work equally well upon silk, cotton, woollen, and linen goods, braiding, binding, cording, tucking, hemming, filling, gathering, seaming, quilting, performing every species of sewing with a speed of from 1,000 to 12,000 stitches per minute ; makes a regular, strong, and beautiful stitch, exactly the same on both sides of the fabric sewed ; is simple in construction, easy of management, and elegant in appearance. At the present REDUCED PRICES there is no excuse for having shuttle machines.
