COMMERCIAL INTELLI G E NC E.
' SofJTHi/AWD Times Office. Friday Evening. Yesterday being tho Presbyterian Half-Yearly Fast-day, the Custom House was closed. To-day, the revenue collected on articles cleared for home consumption was £211175. 3d., being duties levied as follows: —
We havo still to notice a want of activity in our markets, but we are not without signs of an improvement in the trade with the Lake and Nokomai diggings. Consignments of goods on a considerable scale have been forwarded up-country during the presenfc week, and the encouraging accounts which continue to be received from the mining districts give hopes of a steady and active demand. The low price of gold obtainable from the banks here still operates as a great drawback to trade with the diggings, as storekaepers, if -they could dispose of the r gold to advantage or with any profit at all here, would be induced to purchase their stores here also, on a more extended scale than at present. It is to be hoped that a change may soon be effected in this matter; it is a subject of no small moment to the community at large. We have no arrivals of flour to notice of any momeat for some time past, and holders still are generally indisposed to part with Adelaide under £32, although sales may have been made at a less figure. We quote current price at £30 to £32; Tasmanian fetches £28. Oats may be stated at 4s. 6d. to ss. 6d. Potatoes rule higher afc presenfc than they have done for a considerable time past, Some holders will not sell under £13 a ton. In other articles we cannot quote any change of prices worthy of remark.
