THE object contemplated by the promoters of this undertaking is the development of the agricultural resources of the Province. Immense tracts of land are constantly being taken up, and if the occupiers of such lands turn their attention to ordinary farming pursuits, there will soon be a large yield of cereals. But up to this time, whatever the quantity of corn grown, there has been no means of bringing it into use for human food ; and we have a considerable population daily consuming flour, every ounce of which is imported from the neighboring colonies. If the Southland farmers can find a market for their wheat in Invercargill, they will soon produce sufficient breadstuff's for the wants of the Province, and eventually make Southland one of the sources of supply to Northern Australia. The Company will consist of One Thousand Shares, of £10 each ; the liability of each share. ;holder is limited to the amount of his shares. It is intended to purchase a piece of land — say an acre or more — in the vicinity of the Jetty, or some equally suitable locality, and to erect thereon a Mid for the manufacture of flour and oatmeal, and a Malt-house — the kiln of winch would also serve for drying the oats to be ground, and any wheat which may require it. Ifc is proposed to construct tho Mill of timber, strongly framed and braced together, tlie Enginehouse of brick. The Malt-house should also be of brick. Stores for wheat and Hour, either of brick or timber. The amount of business which may reasonably be expected at starting is as follows : — Estimating the population of the Province at eight thousand, tliere Avil be an annual consumption of about fourteen hundred tons of flour, the produce of sixty-four thousand bushels of wheat, all of which might be Provincial grown, if the farmers would produce it at a price to exclude importation. The proposed Mill, driving thr c pairs of stones three hundred days of twelve hours, and dressing three hours each day, would turn out about that . quantity. The consumption of oatmeal is nofc very great, bufc a little might be done in it, and the mill would drive a pair of stones for grinding oats whilst dressing wheat meal. The Malt-house might be constructed capable of turning out three or four hundred bushels per week for thirty weeks, if a supply of barley could be depended on ; any quantity not required for the home market would find a ready sale in Melbourne or Sydney. Referring to the statement mado above as to the quantity of fibur annually required to meet the wants of the Province ; if an average price of twenty pounds per ton be assumed, we find that ■ twenty-eight thousand pounds per annum has to be raised in the Province, and sent abroad in exchange for one article of food alone. It is unnecessary to point out how much benefit would result from the retention of so large a sum in the Province, besides the employment of an increased number of agricultural laborers, and the creation , of a class of small farmers. Having thus laid the prospects and advantages of the company before the pubhc, the members of the provisional committee appeal to their fellowcolonists to aid them in realizing an undertaking fraught with such important results, ahd trust that the speedy completion of the share list will prove : that the people of Southland are. not indifferent to their true interests.
