THE ELECTIONS.

It was fully expected that the Northern mail steamer "Phoebe would haye brought the writs for the ensuing elections, but it appears that such is, : after^ all, ; not; ,the case. This will allow another fortnight's; time for the thickening of the election: fights, which now haye a semblance of being more numerous than at the outset? was considered likely. ■ ' \ For the town of Invercargill, another candidate appears in the person of His; Honor Dr. Menzies, the present Super-: intendent. A requisition, to - which: have been appended somewhere about [ 100 signatures, has been presented to him, • and his reply has been favorable to' the> wishes of his requisitionists. We refer: our readers to the reply, as given elsewhere in this issue; meanwhile we hold over any remarks of our own till a future occasion. From our advertising columns, it will be seen that Mr. Holmes has consented _to become a candidate for the Oteramika District. It is not expected that he will be opposed. "We offer some remarks on this gentleman's ■ political views, as embodied in his reply, elsewhere. Mr. Edmund Grillow, it will likewise be observed, has announced his intention to stand for the district of Longwood. Requisitions to Dr. Samuel Hodgkinson and J. Crerar, Esq., in favor of their becoming candidates for the representation of the town of Eiverton, will be found in our advertising columns. "We have it, on undeniable authority, that Mr. Howell will stand for re-election as one of the representatives for this place. Mr. Bright, at the request of his requisitionists, has addressed the electors of Eiverton, and explained his political views. It was never his intention, however, to come forward as a candidate for a seat in Council. We bava before us our reporter's notes of the meeting, but inasmuch as Mr. Bright is not a candidate, we think it unnecessary to publish the proceedings in extenso. Mr. J. C. Henderson has at length announced himself in the field for the representation of the district of Campbelltown. The requisition of the electors, and his reply thereto, will be found elsewhere. We understand that requisitions are being got up in favor of Messrs. Matthew Scott and W. H. Nurse, inviting them to become candidates for the representation of the Aparima district.
