(From the Argus, of 29th September.) Maryborough . September 28. A volunteer rifle match has taken place to-day, the result of a challenge from the Maldon (2nd Castlemaine) Rifles to the Maryborough Rifles. Each party fired at their own butts. The score waa as follows : — Maldon, 530 ; Maryborough, 647. Maryborough thus beat Maldon by 117 points. j Stdxey, September 28. Carey and Haswell have been convicted of conspiracy, and sentenced to ten years on the roads. The detectives have got over £3,000, obtained by the prisoners | through forgeries. Mr. Rosbery, formerly of Melbourne, has been appointed superintendent of police. He will be acting inspectorgeneral of police in case of that officer's absence or illness. Sugar is lower. Mr. Threlkeld offered a cargo of Mauritius, ex Fairy Rock, but withdrew the whole. A Southern train has narrowly escaped destruction. A package of twelve pounds of gunpowder caught fire. A passenger courageously threw the package out of the window, when it immediately exploded. At a meeting ofthe shareholders ofthe Bank of New South Wales, a resolution has leen passed to place one-third of the capital on the London register, instead of one-fourth as at present. The resolutioh requires confirmation, before it can be carried out. Brandy is firmer. Geneva easier. Maize quiet at 4s. Id. Wheat in demand at lis. 6d. ADEiiAiDE, September 2S. James Miller has been apprehended, pending instructions from Melbourne. Application was made to the Bench of Magistrates to-day, that the property found on him should be given up. The Bench refused to grant the application. Alarge sale of Duffield's flo,ur has taken place at £24 10s., and there have been small sales of best brands at £25. Wheat, 10s. 4d., but little offering.
