THE ELECTIONS.

We publish in another part of to-day's issue a requisition from certain electors of the Oteramika District to Mr. Matthew Holmes, praying him to allow himself to be put in nomination as a candidate for the seat. Mr. Holmes' answer has not been published, but we have it on reliable authority that he will consent. „ Mr. C. S. Button addressed the electors of the Waihopui District yesterday evening in the Plough Inn, Harris ville. He is in favor of Mr. Holmes as Superintendent. He thinks that the municipal affairs of Invercargill could be better and more economically managed in the hands of the Provincial Government than under the present Town Board. He is of opinion that the Roads Ordinance requires great alteration. On the question of j immigration Mr. Button holds that we should endeavor to induce settlers of a better. class ;'to come out— men of small capital, who could become at once farmer?. As' regards the new Land Act he is strongly" "opposeirto the raising of the price per acre, as tending to retard settlement: and" is" also opposed to the present .Education Ordinance, and considers that a change-is Jiecesaary iv the preseiifc insolvency laws. ' ' ' Mr, Tarlton appeals to the " electors andaion-electors'of Invercargill.'' ,O H i£ ? address is a rather peculiar specimen of 'English composition, and shows that ourj' Treasurer entertains no_ mean estimate of.
